Eligibility and induction
Students will be eligible to join NHS after the first semester of their sophomore year. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher will be candidtes for induction. The Faculty Council will review all candidates and then send letters of invitation to those who are selected. GPAs will be reviewed again after the first semester of junior year and any student with a 3.5 or higher who wasn't previously eligible will be considered for membership. An induction ceremony will be held in the spring semester. Any student who is not selected and wishes to be considered should contact the principal to make an appeal.
Requirements of membership
Student members are required to maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA. GPAs are checked after the conclusion of each semester. If a member’s GPA is lower than 3.5, he or she will be placed on academic probation. The member has the subsequent semester to raise the GPA back up to 3.5 in order to retain membership. If the member does not raise his or her GPA back up to 3.5 or higher, he or she will be dismissed.
Additionally, NHS members are required to complete a minimum of five hours of service per semester. The service can be completed via chapter projects or with individual acts of service. Service completed for an academic class cannot be counted toward NHS service hours. If a member does not complete service hours, he or she can make them up as needed the following semester. If a member continues to not complete service hours, he or she will be noted as “not in good standing” with the chapter. Any member “not in good standing” will not be permitted to wear the NHS stole during the graduation ceremony.
NHS members should be leaders in the school in regard to leadership and character, as well. Members who face disciplinary measures from school or law enforcement may be placed on probation or dismissed, depending on the severity of the issue.
